DMV Requirements for Driver's License if You Are 18 Years or Older

Anyone over the age of 15 1/2 must have a valid permit to start driving in the State of California. If you are over 18 you do not need to take a driving course or wait 6 months after passing your permit test to get your license like someone under 18 years old but you do need to pass the written permit test and then take a road test to test your driving skills before you can get your license.

  • Pass an eye exam
  • Provide proof of age and US citizenship (birth certificate or passport)
  • Provide social security number

  • Pay Application fee of $45 (current fee) to the State of California (You get 3 attempts at the written test and 1 attempt at the road test)
  • Have your photo taken
  • Provide a thumb print

We recommend everyone who is preparing to take the written permit test to take an Approved DMV Online Driver's Education Course or In-Class Drivers Education Course. G & G Driving School offers both. Our Online Drivers Education Course is approved by the State of California and is only $39.00. We also recommend that every person read and understand all the material in the DMV Drivers Handbook including all road signs and laws. 
Once you pass your written permit test you will be issued a permit to drive. However you cannot drive alone until you get your actual driver's license. The DMV recommends that everyone, no matter what age take an approved driving course prior to taking the road test.

How We May Be Of Assistance

Once you have succesfully completed the above you will be issued a permit to drive but this is not a license. This permit only allows you to drive with someone over the age of 18 that has a valid California drivers license. The DMV does not require that you take a drivers training course but they do recommend that you enroll in an approved Behind the Wheel Lesson program prior to taking your DMV test.
